Etiology of strictures

  1. Congenital: rare
    I have seen “Cobb’s collar” white ring (narrowing but not tight) in the proximal bulbar urethra occasionally in adults with no positive history related to the etiology of the stricture.
  2. Trauma
    1. Penile -direct penetrating injury or gunshot wound
    2. Bulbar- Falling astride or a perineal kick
    3. Membranous- Pelvic fracture urethral distraction defects
  3. Infective- Gonococcal-incidence less now
  4. Lichen Sclerosis et atrophicus (Balanitis Xerotica Obliterans)
  5. Iatrogenic - Instrument or catheter induced
  6. Idiopathic - Actually we cannot establish the etiology though there must be one
  7. Urethral cancer
